Joyce's work brings together her unique artistic background in dance, archeology, and photography, with inspiration taken from nature and the human figure. Formerly a principal dancer for the Ministerio de Cultura modern dance troupe in Costa Rica, Joyce spent later years doing archaeological research and illustration at UCLA, combined with personal explorations in photography.
Since 1995, Joyce has focused on creating functional and sculptural ceramics. Beginning as a Mentor Student in Sculpture, Furniture & Product Design at Santa Monica College, Joyce quickly adapted to the new medium, and studied figurative sculpture with Johathan Bickart and Robert Cunningham, taking workshops with Arthur Gonzales, Patti Warashina, Peter Vandenberg & Anne Courier. She later joined master potter Richard McColl as a studio partner and collaborator for 5 years.
Joyce's work has been featured in shows in the Venice Art Walk and Off Artwalk , at the Bee's Wing Arts Gallery in Santa Barbara, The Artist's Web Gallery and Sabina Lee Galleries in Santa Monica, the Finegood Gallery at the Jewish Federation/Milken Cultural Center and has a Tree of Life Seder Plate in the permanent collection of the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
In 2004 Joyce collaborated with renowned landscape artist, Nancy Power & Associates, developing an Outdoor Agave fountain sculpture for a Santa Barbara estate. Other public ceramic installations include Dedication tiles for six gardens at the Brentwood Science Magnet School, a large ceramic sculptural wall mural: The Mission Garden Wall. She was also commissioned for a large tile Donor Wall at the Brentwood Science Magnet School in Brentwood, California and two Donor Walls at the Marquez Elementary School in Pacific Palisades, California. She has also created indoor and outdoor ceramic work for Thomas Safran & Assoc. in the greater Los Angeles area.
Jennifer Joyce has been teaching out of her Santa Monica studio since 1995, having taught the summer ceramics program at the Marlborough School in Los Angeles from 2001-2004, Crossroads Summer School in 2006 and ceramics at The Oakwood School in North Hollywood.
